Study of History - Enriching & Inspiring

Image
History - Our bridge to past and future   I just finished reading City of Dijjins by William Daralymple. The book and the author deserves much praise for the careful chronicling of the author's stay in Delhi, his research and visits to various sites and narration of Delhi's history along side the appreciation of the forts, ruins and legends of he city. Reading history leaves one with mixed feelings. On one end, our daily existence and quests seem inconsequential, mundane, irrelevant or passable in contrast to the grandeur, developments, thrills and climaxes of the past. Viewed against the backdrop of the historical canvas, our lives seem like a small dot which could get washed off in the next brush stroke of time. And yet history lends a hope that like all the historical events which were perhaps equ ally mundane and commonplace when they occurred, our lives too can also form an important milestone in the evolution of society and mankind. One day,...

Three key elements in B-Plan writing

Image
A business plan or B-Plan as it is popularly referred to as, is an essential starting point for any venture. It is meant to describe the idea, context (need, assumptions, competition etc) along with the delivery model and the requirements for the model. The B-Plan is often mentioned in the context of a new venture and that too from a fund raising perspective. However the B-Plan can have many other utilities other than fund raise. Irrespective of the fund raise objective, a B-Plan can certainly help crystalize the thoughts of the entrepreneur, bring out an agreement amongst co-promoters and articulate the vision, business model and fund requirements in a cohesive manner.  In that context, a B-plan is also relevant for any existing venture or any expansion project. What constitutes a good B-Plan? There a number of templates available on the net and each person may have a different way of presenting his or her concept including the financial projections. However, the desig...

The Visionary Entrepreneur, the Business Manager and the Journey of an Idea towards an Organization

Image
There is often a confusion about ‘Visionary or Entrepreneur’ vs. a ‘Business Manager’. Which one is better. Here is a construct presenting their differences in the context of describing the journey of transformation of an idea into an organization. The VISIONARY ENTREPRENEUR is someone who envisions and imagines a future possibility, a trend, an idea, a gap area or a business opportunity. This envisioning is not day dreaming or creative imagination. It is a result of a mixture of experience, understanding, data and intuition. A BUSINESS MANAGER on the other hand is someone who is data driven. He/she analyses the data to arrive at the trend and decisions.  The visionary or entrepreneur connects several dots to create a picture. . The business manager breaks apart a problem to reach the root cause and find a solution. A visionary entrepreneur starts from one end but is expected to take the business IDEA to the other end where it becomes an ‘ ORGANIZATION ’ man...

Why Study Management

(I had written this many years back as part of IIML alumni initiative on developing some content for orientation of new batch at IIML. The article is still valid and relevant. Provides some food for thought for a new management student. Veterans may also find it interesting or perhaps nostalgic ;) The history of the development of Management discipline is replete with many major debates like – What is management, Is management a science or an art, Can management be taught, Leadership vs. Management, Are managers/leaders born or made etc. All the proponents of the various diverse views in debates have equally strong points backed by logic and example. And hence most of these debates are often inconclusive. However, what is required from us as disciples and followers of the discipline of management is to take a pragmatic view on these debates, accept the various viewpoints and arrive at an approach which is beneficial to us and provides adequate direction for thought and action...

Journey of Self Development

Speech given as chief guest at the graduation ceremony of the 52 nd UXL – Chandigarh batch on 19th October 2012. Dear Asit, dignitaries on the dais, fellow Tuff Trackers and all guests present here, Good Morning!! It is a matter of great pleasure and pride for me to address this august gathering. All of us present here are privileged to be witness of this 'birth ceremony' of future leaders. Yes, indeed, the graduates of UXL Tuff Track course are the most likely leaders of future. They are the most equipped, committed and motivated citizens. These are the people from whom the 'leaders' of tomorrow will emerge.  Leadership is not just about making speeches, leading mass movements or holding high offices. Indeed, all those are symbols associated with leaders. We often see and recognize leaders this way in our daily life. However, the essence of leadership begins with an expanded consciousness of self. It is when one realizes that there is more t...

Travails of Entrepreneurship

Image
It is said that 'Entrepreneurship' is tough. It is a difficult activity requiring enormous grit, courage and risk taking ability. It requires the ability to deal with uncertainty and a lot of self motivation. A lot of such things said about the 'Travails of Entrepreneurship' are indeed true. As an entrepreneur, I have experienced many of them, observed them in fellow entrepreneurs and deliberated about the source, implication and remedy for them. Recently I realized another challenge or dimension to entrepreneurship. It is to do with accountability and ownership of results. In a traditional 'Job' scenario, an individual is often not 'solely' responsible for results and he/she works as per the directions of his/her superiors As a result an individual does not need to wait to see the success of his/her efforts to feel a sense of satisfaction or accomplishment. Pacifying the boss or justifying the cause of delay/failure to another source ...
